Symposium World Environment Day 2010

"ENVIRONMENT DAY Talks 10 - Value of the DIVERSITY of Values"
28 May 2010, Vienna International Centre

The International Year of Biodiversity focuses on the complex concept of biodiversity. But what is the idea behind it? It is more than just a matter of animal and plant species whose existence or loss is barely visible for many of us. Biodiversity is the basis of complex habitats which are essential for our natural and economic survival.

ENVIRONMENT DAY Talks 10
This year’s “ENVIRONMENT DAY Talks” are aimed at examining the concept of biodiversity from different angles and disciplines, thus to create new perspectives. In three discussion forums on business, spatial/ regional planning and tourism, practical application possibilities for the integration of biodiversity will be presented. Discuss with experts and take the opportunity to integrate biodiversity into your field of activities.

In addition to the program with attending top speakers, we are also looking forward to present you video messages about biodiversity of Achim Steiner (Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP) and Jane Goodall (With many thanks to the Jane Goodall Institute - Austria, www.janegoodall.at).

The VALUE of the DIVERSITY
The continuing loss of species and habitat raises the question of the value that biological diversity entails. From an ecological point of view it is about the loss of interdependency between organisms and their habitat. This loss additionally has economic consequences worldwide. International studies reveal an estimated economic value of hundreds of millions of dollars of the biological diversity and its loss by destruction respectively. This leads to the question whether biodiversity nowadays is only valuated by its benefits or if it is conceded a value of its own.
